Old Amersham, Buckinghamshire

The King's Arms, Old Amersham
The outside of this pub was used to depict 'The Jolly Boatman' in the film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'. It is now an up-market hotel and conference venue.
Known as 'The King's Arms', it was built in the 14th century as a coaching inn. Pub names like 'The King's Arm's', 'The Queen's Head' or 'The Crown' were given to demonstrate allegiance to the monarch of the time. Although the inside of this place still has lots of original features such as old timbers and beams, the hotel is very modern. Old Amersham is only about 20 miles from Heathrow airport.
Another pub courtyard in Old Amersham
Old Amersham is in the low-lying Chiltern Hills to the north-west of London. It is a charming place with lots of good restaurants and quaint shops. There is a 17th century market hall and many old and interesting buildings. The community was mentioned in the Domesday Book, nine hundred years ago.

Wow, I love these posts of yours with as Rob says "distinctly English" structures. So unlike anything we have in the U.S., and gives me a lovely tour! Thank you for your effort in sharing your photos!!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Rob & Serenity : Thanks for the comments friends and enjoy your own weekends. Since I started blogging I have looked a little closer at my own surroundings, which my current job enables me to do. If possible, I do seek the 'distinctly English' look.

In the top pic, the pub or coach house, I am reminded of Germany, but this is a lot 'cleaner' looking 'space' wise. There are communities there which are plenty clean, but then the look changes to more modern, that is my memory anyway. I do love the style of bldgs, and streets, oh yes, in Germany there would be a VW parked on the sidewalk, maybe two or three.

Tell me, are there such things as 'modern subdivisions', sort of areas of new and non-descript houses, apt bldgs, in the country, or are they bldg in old style, maybe not bldg much at all, plenty of residential and business space already avail?

jim: I think lots of the older buildings in Germany are in a similar style to what we have here!

(The word subdivision is strictly American English! We don't use it here; the nearest is 'housing estate'.) So, are there modern non-descript housing estates? You betcha! Don't forget my presentation of England is highly selective. It's not Disneyland and there are plenty of ugly 'tower blocks'. Sometimes it's a nice surprise when you notice new architecture sympathetic to the older buildings around it.

That's beautiful photography, bazza. That courtyard is stunning. I was particularly drawn to the Tudor style in the villages we visited in England, like I couldn't get enough of them. How far is this from where you live? BTW, I'd like to link you to my blog. Okay by you?

This is an interesting reminder of our short (European) history here in the States.
Beyond the few Spanish structures still standing from the mid 1500’s, there are occupied Native American structures up to 1000 years old at Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. Other than that, with the exception of the northeastern part of the country, buildings over 150 years old are rare.

gem: It's less than an hours drive from the centre of London and about an hour and a half from me. I was there on business (as in most of this type of post). I like the Tudor style too (mine own house is 'mock-Tudor') but some consider it a bit 'twee'.
I'd love to exchange links with you (and I will be with Mimi too). Always good to hear from you.

slaghammer: Hi, I saw lot's of good architecture in the States. Most of the State Capitol buildings are magnificent; they don't have to be old to be good! I have heard about the New Mexico dwellings, sounds very interesting.
