The Costa Del Sol, Spain

The Marina at Puerto Banus

I just got back from three full days on the 'Sun Coast' of Spain. We had three days of unbroken sunshine with temperatures in the mid 70’s (24c). Marbella (pronounced ‘mar-bayer’), in the province of Andalucia, is the classiest resort on that coast. We parked our hire car between a Lamborghini and a Maserati without shame! Puerto Banus is the marina area of Marbella and is the kind of place where lots of people-watching goes on. Although not officially a part of the ‘beautiful people’ set me and my gang did get some looks – mainly opened-mouthed disbelief. ‘What are these people doing here?’ kind of looks. Although the town is dripping with money and is the resort of choice for starlets, millionaires and the richest of all Britons, soccer players, there is still a down to earth side of town. Orange Square in the old town has a 16th century Town Hall and lot’s of small good value restaurants.

The 16th c. Town Hall in thePlaza de los Naranjos, Marbella. One of the many fine beaches and promanades in Marbella.

Wow, many blogger friends went away to somewhere exciting for the weekend and had fun. I'm so envious. The place looks wonderful, bazza! I love the pics. Welcome back.

Ah, Marbeya. By absolute coincidence, I can say I've been to Marbella too, on a holiday that also took me to the little-known enclave Cueta, as well as Casablanca.

I have a little pendant I got from... a Picasso centre? in Marbella, my "diablo Espanol", which I will post at some point and ask if anyone can identify whether it's copied from a painting...

I was there over 20 years ago! - I don't know if it was a playground for the rich then (I stayed at a youth hostel), but I do remember it was as if a tourist enclave had been shoved between the original town and the sea.

Hi Stephen. There is a Picasso museum in Malaga, where he was born, abot 30 minutes up the coast from Marbella. Could be you got the pendant there. I'm pretty knowledgable about Picasso - post it and I'll try to identify it.

I was last there 1979 and returned to England to find that Thatcher had been elected. "Oh no", I thought, little realising how long she was going to "reign".
27 years ago and it seems like yesterday!

Bazza,
One of these days I really want to become a stow away in your suitcase. You go to such lovely places. Thanks for sharing your pictures. Absolutely stunning. I am going there in my mind right now, and I am enchanted.

Bazza, magnificent pics, and place, would love to hang there a bit, then get back to work, lol.

I can smell and taste the place tho, rich and beautiful, delicious.

Glad you had fun, if I lived in Europe again, I would try to be running around too, I use to as much as possible, was wonderful. The USA is just different for some reason, lack of cultural differences I guess, less reason to go places even tho there are many beautiful places.

Enjoyed the vicarious pleasure, thanks Bazza.

rob: It's strange how memories can be sparked by an unlikely source.

serenity: Actually, in this case, the photos aren't mine, Serenity, but you are right it is an enchanting place.

jim: I travelled extensively in the States a few times and I found quite a lot of difference between, say, New Orleans, San Francisco and Cape Cod. I can understand why there are relatively few Americans who hold a passport.

Hi Mimi, the journey to Spain took six hours door-to-door so we managed three full days for little cost. Too good to miss!

Touche' Bazza, but, so quick to SPAIN, so little cost, not so here, Dallas to SF would eat me alive, and take too long doing it.

I remember driving from country to country, from Germany, here, not so fast, and not so much fun. But partly that can be my perception, somewhat at least.

I used to go to Switzerland for the weekend, or Austria, or France, or so on. And on very little money, very little. I would like that again. Alas.
