Running On Empty

The album Running On Empty by Jackson Browne can genuinely claim to be unique. With two exceptions all of the songs were new and had not been previously recorded but it's not a studio album; every song is a 'live' recording. They were recorded on stage, backstage and even in hotel rooms. One of the songs begins with a backstage recording and seamlessly segues into an on-stage performance. The song 'Rosie' was recorded with all the roadies and stage-hands standing round Browne's piano and that's how it's now performed on stage. The theme of the album is the life of a band on the road.
All of the above, though, is not the most remarkable thing about Running On Empty. What really makes it stand out is that the songs are so very wonderful. My own favourites are 'The Road', 'You Love The Thunder' and, of course, 'Rosie'. You gotta love 'Rosie'. If you love yourself don't let too much more of your life pass by without knowing these songs,

I think I only heard his music once. Wasn't he the one who married Darryl Hannah?

No he never married her (unless it was very recently). Jackson Browne & Darryl Hannah: that would be the Sacred and the Profane surely?

I was obsessed by the blues during Jackson Brown's heyday & still am. I’ll visit itunes and see what I missed on that detour.

What a lovely way to put it, bazza: "If you love yourself," listen to Jackson Browne. One of my favorites is Opening Farewell, but I don't know if it's on Running on Empty. I could listen to Opening Farewell every day. Wonderful post.

slaghammer: I, too am a great fan of blues music. I like the older stuff such as Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. I really got into it through listening to British bands like The Rolling Stones and going to the sources. Isn't it strange how the British groups took Rock and Blues music and sold it back to where it came from in the first place?

gem: I don't know 'Opening Farewell'. It's not on any of my five or six Browne albums; I'll check it and get back to you! My all time favourite of his is 'The Pretender' from the eponymous album.

I remember him, I will try to hear some of this album, it does sound good from your description, I do like blues and piano quite well.

Great looking cover too.

I listened to one of his albums for some time a long time ago. I think I still have one of his albums in vinyl called Late for the Sky. But somehow I got tired of it. The songs sounded the same to me, with a little variation. And they were depressing too; I guess it's the style and voice.
There are many mega-stars I never listened to because their songs all sound the same to me: Elton John, Phil Collins, U2, Robbie Williams and many others. I think these people would benefit from singing other people's song and changing their styles from time to time. Just an opinion. I am not a successful singer or musician.

Bazza,
Thanks for the reminder. I haven't listened to Jackson Browne in years. Gonna have to remedy that.

jim: Browne's music is more rock than blues but he does a great version of Bill Broonzy's 'Cocaine' on 'Running on Empty'.

deepak, mimi & serenity: I believe it's worth searching out and hearing this music especially for the strength of the lyrics.

imemine: Browne's music can sound a bit 'samey' at first but after a short while the songs begin to separate and imprint their own identity. I think I would say a lot of it is 'sad' rather than depressing. When I am in a sad or reflective mood I want to hear music that is sympathetic to my feelings.
I agree about those other artists you mention; non of them excite me.

Bazza, I am letting Imemines' Browne recording download while I visit here. I will see if I remember the sounds.

I tried this evening listening to some popular music, music with lyrics and very moody and personal kind of stuff, couldn't do it, too much behind me for that, it just depressed me and threatened to get me involved. I had to turn it off and go back to classical, more neutral and un-reminding, more abstract and simple in a sense. The classical stuff leaves me free, the popular stuff just engages me more, too much so. I will try Browne and see what his sound is like. Thanks.

Hi Bazza,

I have listened to Clyde a little of late. I have to say, however, that from a strictly musical perspective, I find him imaginative only in small patches.

Yet I will give him good credit for... um... three songs:

- These Days (Nico expressed it perfectly)
- Redneck Friend
- Running on empty

All three rather different, and not strictly in keeping with his main oeuvre. Maybe his degree of variation is too subtle for me, but I rather tend to agree with imemine...

samuru999: How nice of you to drop in with a cheerful greeting. Please return anytime!

jim: I did not know the song at all, that imemine downloaded. Browne can be something of an acquired taste, if you hear something you think you might like it's worth getting to know the music a bit better. If it's not for you then, fair enough, it's not for you.

stephen: Yes, I had forgotten that Clyde Jackson Browne is his real name. My personal favourite song of his is 'The Pretender' and if you like those three songs there are dozens more worth perservering with. But, hey-ho, each to his own, eh? I am not an evangelist for Jackson Browne, it's just what I came up with introspectively. Thanks for the visit.

. it isn't on that album but the song "For Everyman" on the album of the same name is powerful spiritual yearning for unity . . what a poet Jackson is, "please don't confront me with my failures, I haven't forgotten them" -was from "These Days" when a girlfriend committed suicide . .

You are right Bradford; Browne is a poet and although there is a clear difference between lyrics and poetry, a lot of his words work well on the page.
'For Everyman' is a wonderful song. It was his second wife who committed suicide, the year after they were married and several of his songs relate to that, 'Sleeps Silent Gate' being a prime example. Thanks for visiting - see you at yours!
